Η Elaine Cunningham γεννήθηκε το 1957 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σπούδασε Μουσική και πέρασε αρκετά χρόνια διδάσκοντας  την εν λόγω τέχνη, αλλά και Ιστορία της Μουσικής. Ξεκίνησε να γράφει όταν ο πρώτος της γιος ήταν μωρό.

Το πρώτο της βιβλίο, το Elfshadow, ανήκει στον κόσμο των Forgotten Realms και μάλιστα οι συνέχειες του παρουσιάζουν και χαρακτήρες που δημιουργήθηκαν από τον ίδιο τον Ed Greenwood.

Η Cunningham είναι επίσης η συγγραφέας του New York Times bestseller Dark Journey, το δέκατο βιβλίο της σειράς Star Wars New Jedi Order saga. H Cunningham ζει στη Νέα Αγγλία, μαζί με τον σύζυγο και τους δυο γιούς της.
